As an important part of door, stiles are the vertical pieces of the door. The specifying locking hardware or other door hardware will be mounted near to the tiles of the door. The width of stile has to be considered carefully to install mortise locks and exit devices. These door hardware take up a lot space on the door, and please make sure the stiles are wide enough for them.

Rails are the horizontal components of the door, and is important to consider for top-mounted and bottom-mounted hardware such as concealed or surface mounted closer, barn door hanger and floor guide. For the structural integrity of the door, a rail is generally 1 1/4” (30mm) to 10” (254mm) wide depending on the application. To meet the ADA compliance, the bottom rail is usually at least 10” wide, while the top rail is required to be 6” minimum for surface mounted closer.
